Flint, Michigan, has a hard scrabble reputation. From Roger & Me to the water crisis, when the national media turns its attention to Flint, it tends to characterize the city as an example of economic turmoil in de-industrializing America.

But the city is much more than that.

Without downplaying the challenges that have marked the last several decades, there’s still a proud, hardworking, highly skilled workforce in Flint. Along with that, there’s a number of strong-willed, enterprising companies ready to employ them.

But what are the best skills to have if you’re looking for a position in Flint?

According to the Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce, the three major employers in the Flint area are the manufacturing, health care and education sectors. Let’s take a closer look at each of those and outline their local footprint.

Manufacturing

Despite the changes in the economy over the last 50 years or so, General Motors remains the biggest employer in the region by far. The Chamber of Commerce reports that GM employs 7,500 people in the county – more than twice the area’s number-two employer.

There are a bunch of smaller manufacturers in the area as well. Creative Foam Corporation, Magna, Northgate and TMI Climate Solutions all make the list of the area’s top employers. Each provides at least 200 jobs to local residents. Meanwhile, a long list of other companies employ between 100 and 200 people.

Health Care

Medical positions make up a significant opportunity in Flint as well. Three out of the top four regional employers are medical facilities (as discussed, GM represents the other top employer). Genesys Regional Medical Center, McLaren Regional Medical Center and Hurley Medical Center each employ more than 2,700 people.

All told, the large medical facilities in the region employ more than 10,000 people, in a country with a population of about 410,000. When you include all the smaller practices, this makes the health care profession a significant employer in the region, creating a major opportunity for nurses, physician’s assistants and others with a medical background.

Education

The education system provides another major employer in the Flint area. The Flint School District employs nearly 1,300 people on its own, with another 950 working for the Genesee Intermediate School District. Meanwhile, the local branch of the University of Michigan employees another 1,100 people.

This creates an opportunity for teachers, counselors and administrators. There’s also a large amount of back office work for clerks and secretaries.

The same office skills that might land a job in one of the local educational opportunities could also lead to success at some of Flint’s other major employers.

Government offices rank among the region’s biggest employers. This includes the county government, which employs about 1,000 people. Meanwhile, Huntington Bank also appears among the city’s top job providers, with 600 positions in area. As in the educational space, job seekers with appropriate office skills will likely thrive in these opportunities as well.
